This landscape, although starry and soft and serene, actually reveals a deep sense of helplessness. In Arles (south of France), he began to paint his curved and swirling brushstrokes which seem to be endowed with physical and spiritual vitality. He uses pure colors, yellow, green, blue to paint landscapes.
It is with this enthusiasm that Vincent van Gogh persuaded Paul Gauguin to join him. They had been working side by side for almost two months when a serious argument, which had become famous, broke out: Van Gogh threatened Gauguin with a razor!
The same night Vincent cuts off an ear. A few months later, suicidal, he is voluntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital in Saint Rémy-de-Provence. He paints fiercely: his state varies from deep depression to intense activity, and we find in his paintings the very movement of his pathology.
His illness had an influence on his work, as can be seen in the tumult of that eventful night he would have painted from his cell. As luminous as a sun, the moon is dazzling. Here Van Gogh favors the aspiration and not the projection of this nocturnal glow. The sky comes to life in a monochrome of blues that is both grandiose and terrifying.
Among all the arabesques that make up this Night, Van Gogh has concentrated all the circularity in the center of his painting. The most important of the spirals seems to translate and transcribe the apogee of his pathology. Torpor seizes this tree typical of the South of France. The branches move like waves. Far from any quietude, they act as an echo to all this tortured and sinuous environment.
